Things you should know before moving to Las Vegas

Sports Enthusiasts will love Las Vegas

If you are a sports fan who is relocating to Las Vegas, you will feel right at home. Unless your handicap is in the single digits, it’s wise to spend on lessons with 70+ golf courses. Apart from actual sports, “gaming” and spectator sports are the order of the day in Vegas. The T-Mobile Arena home to the NHL franchise, the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Mandalay Bay Events Center hosts the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces. The Raiders of the National Football League have officially relocated to Las Vegas, bringing football to the city for the first time. Not interested in any of these options? There’s also the World Series of Bowling and poker, which is the city’s unofficial official sport.

Outdoor activities everywhere

Las Vegas features some of the best and most diverse outdoor activities available. And it is all within a thirty-minute drive. Red Rock Canyon is a great place to rock climb, road bike, or hike. On Lake Mead, you can waterski, wakeboard, or kayak. Mt. Charleston is a great place to mountain bike, hike, horseback ride, or even ski in the winter and early spring. Starting the day skiing and finishing it by the poolside is a very enjoyable way to spend a day.

Expect the unexpected!

Las Vegas remains a show town with unexpected occurrences happening every minute. Elvis could even be found in practically any place. As you both fetch a cold one at 7-11, Captain Jack Sparrow may also surprise you. In the grocery store, you may encounter feather-clad women. And you could run into any number of celebrities while going about your daily activities. In Vegas, strange things happen all the time, but you ultimately learn to anticipate the unexpected. But well, that’s Vegas for you.

Getting around the city

One of the most crucial things to learn before moving to Las Vegas is how to navigate the city. Las Vegas encompasses a large suburban area outside of the Strip and downtown regions. It takes about 40 minutes to get from one end of town to the other, so it’s advisable to have a car within reach. The public transportation system isn’t spectacular, but the motorways and city streets are simple to learn. Although traffic is light in comparison to major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and Houston, there are, nevertheless, congested regions. In addition, the Strip, as well as the iconic “spaghetti junction,” a highway crossing near downtown, have the worst traffic in Vegas.

There’s everything for everyone

This is an obvious reminder, yet it could save a life. Las Vegas is a fantastic city full of interesting people and activities for everyone. Whatever your vice is, it WILL be used against you as well. Shopping, food, gaming — the list goes on. Check-in with yourself on a regular basis to ensure that you are taking advantage of living in Las Vegas rather than it taking advantage of you.

Low Taxes for everyone

Nevada not only has no income tax, but it also boasts the lowest taxes in the country. Essentially, tourists who play casino slots fund the majority of the state’s needs, including roads, parks, schools, and municipal services. However, Nevada, like many other states, has a sales tax on retail goods. Nevada is also one of the easiest states to start a new business in.

Start loving the weather and climate

In the summer, Las Vegas is so hot (imagine 120 degrees) that you’ll avoid going outside during its hot, scorching days. Summer is spent by locals moving from one air-conditioned space to another. The greatest seasons to enjoy the outdoors are spring and fall when your garden will bloom.

Winter is also moderate, with perhaps a sprinkling of snow every other year or so. Mt. Charleston has enough snow each winter to open the local ski hill for a few weeks. Wind can be quite strong all year, causing haboobs (dust storms) that are both frightening and beautiful.

On the plus side, because there isn’t much rain, your pets won’t have a flea problem because there isn’t enough water for fleas to thrive.

Looking for a job? Try bartending!

Before moving to Las Vegas, you should learn about the local economy and industry. Tourism employed 44 percent of the entire Southern Nevada workforce in 2016. Hospitality jobs are plentiful and lucrative. It’s no surprise that job opportunities abound in Sin City. However, working as a bartender is one of the quickest ways to retire in this city. That is actually a fact. Flip some drinks and learn how to make a couple of cocktails, and you could easily make $100,000 per year. Excluding tips, of course.
